Strive for College and Magoosh Partner to Provide
Free Test Prep to Low-Income College-Bound Students

August 1, 2018 - It's no surprise that children from lower-income families continue to lag behind their peers from wealthier homes on standardized test scores. In fact, the gap between students from the least and most wealthy families is over 400 points on the SAT. On the ACT, students from families making less than $80,000/year score 4 points lower than students from families making over $80,000/year.

That’s why national nonprofit Strive for College and online test prep leader Magoosh have partnered to increase access to quality standardized test preparation for low-income college-bound students. Magoosh is an online multimedia test preparation company that delivers tailored learning experiences. Strive for College provides free college guidance and mentoring services to low-income high school students, who they call “Strivers”, through the UStrive virtual mentoring platform.

Both companies provide web-based services and also offer mobile apps, giving students access anytime, anywhere. They also share a mission for making college admissions more achievable and accessible to all students by eliminating financial obstacles.

For the first time, students who sign up on UStrive this fall will be eligible to receive a free 3-month membership to access Magoosh’s SAT and ACT test prep services. This membership gives Strivers access to over 200 video lessons, more than 1,000 practice questions, practice tests, study schedules, and more.

“We are so excited to partner with Magoosh to enhance test preparation for our students,” said Strive for College founder and CEO Michael Carter. “This partnership is going to help thousands of Strivers who aren’t able to afford these services otherwise ace their tests.”

“Partnering with Strive for College will allow us to further our mission of reducing inequity in college admissions,” said Magoosh CEO and Co-founder Bhavin Parikh. “We're excited to work together as we help even more students overcome the hurdle of standardized testing as they pursue their educational dreams.”

The partnership takes effect just in time for the start of the new school year and height of the college admissions season. Students can sign up to access free college guidance resources and connect with an online mentor at UStrive.com. In doing so, students will receive helpful test prep resources from Magoosh within the UStrive curriculum and learn how to sign up for three free months of test prep services from Magoosh.

About Strive for College
Strive for College was founded in 2007 by Michael J. Carter, then a student at Washington University in St. Louis, to help acutely underserved area high school students apply to college and navigate financial aid. College students volunteered as in-person mentors for high school students, and mentored students achieved substantially better college go-on rates than their non-mentored peers. Strive for College grew to become a respected college access organization, providing in-person mentoring across the country. Delivering its mentoring service at sufficient scale to make a meaningful impact on the national college access problem soon became Strive’s biggest challenge, which led to the national launch of online mentoring in 2014. Online mentoring by Strive for College is now serving students in all 50 US states.

Strive and Michael J. Carter have been featured by CNN Heroes and Forbes 30 Under 30 and received major national media attention from outlets including Time, National Journal, and Fast Company. Strive's I'm First! initiative is a recognized leader in improving college outcomes for first-generation college students. Learn more at striveforcollege.org and imfirst.org.
