Vice Chancellor, University of British Columbia


Santa J. Ono, PhD, served as the University of Cincinnati’s (UC) president from August 2012 until August 2016, when he became Vice Chancellor of the University of British Columbia. Under his leadership, UC achieved its largest enrollment in history at 43,000 and launched Creating Our Third Century, a sharpening of the University’s vision as it prepares for its bicentennial in 2019. His tenure was also marked by increasing accolades for UC, among them its selection as the Public University of the Year by the Washington Center, a No. 3 ranking on U.S. News & World Report’s list of Up-and-Coming Universities and its jump of 21 places in the U.S. News ranking of the best colleges.

Dr. Ono was UC’s first Asian American president and one of only a handful of Asian American university or college presidents in the United States. In December 2013, he was named by the Japanese government as an honorary consul of Japan for the state of Ohio.

Dr. Ono’s service in the community includes membership on the Cincinnati Business Committee and on the boards of Ohio’s Third Frontier, Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber of Commerce, Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Cintrifuse, CincyTech, UC Health, Uptown Consortium, United Way, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and Japan America Society of Cincinnati. He chaired the UC Research Institute board, the United Way Research Council and the board of the Global HEED (Promoting Health, Education and Economic Development), and co-chaired the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Early Grade-Level Reading Campaign. He chaired Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s biopharma task force and was a member of the Chancellor’s Ohio Completion Task Force of the Ohio Board of Regents as well as the Executive Committee of the STRIVE partnership.
