Strivers Announce College Choices

It’s College Signing Day! And success stories are flooding in from Strivers sharing what colleges they got accepted into AND their decision of what school they will attend in the fall.

For us at Strive, these success stories epitomize why we do what we do. And for our volunteer mentors and supporting organizations, it is a time when we all celebrate the success and accomplishments of each student.

Last September Deloitte, the Deloitte Foundation and Strive for College joined forces in a collaborative initiative that engaged hundreds of Deloitte professionals as mentors through Strive. This initiative has seen well over a thousand students receive college guidance. In celebration of College Signing Day, we want to share the stories of two of those students, Frances and Jerry.

Frances recently found out that she got into her dream school, Brandeis University, with a near-full ride scholarship! “It was one of the happiest moments of my life!”

Frances’ mentor helped her get into her dream school!

Frances was born in the Philippines and her family moved to the US when she was 5 years old. Through her formative years she became interested in medicine and was often reading science journals about the latest advancements. This fostered her fascination with biochemistry, leading to her college dream of studying medicine and becoming a biomedical researcher. “I want to conduct research on cancer treatments and drugs,” said Frances.

At the beginning of the school year, Frances found herself with many unanswered questions about applying to college. Through The Common Application, Frances discovered Strive.
“It fit perfectly with the type of program that I have been searching for. I never had that person that was always there to answer my college questions, as neither of my parents attended college in the United States,” said Frances.

Through Strive, Frances got matched up with her Deloitte mentor, Bill Copeland. Bill is Vice Chairman of Deloitte, an education champion and a key proponent behind the Strive and Deloitte initiative.

Frances said, “Strive allowed me to meet my amazing mentor, Mr.Copeland. He believes in me and is always there to answer my pressing questions about college and my future.”

Frances recently found out that she got into her dream school, Brandeis University, with a near-full ride scholarship! “It was one of the happiest moments of my life!,” said Frances. “I texted my mentor within minutes of making my decision, and we later talked. I’m so excited and grateful to be attending a university that resonates with who I am at my core and who I want to become during my undergraduate years! I am a proud member of the Brandeis Class of 2021! Go Judges!”

Jerry & his brother start a family trend of higher education

Jerry was born in Haiti, moved to the US as a kid and grew up in New York. Jerry discovered Strive for College while filling out The Common Application and was matched with Forrest Colyer, a Business Technology Analyst with Deloitte Consulting.

“I decided to give Strive a try,” said Jerry “and I got connected with Forrest. Forrest has been a wonderful mentor. The best part about having a mentor is that he has put me at ease by giving me very good advice. There's a lot of good information out there but it can be hard to sort through it all. Having a real live person to talk through that whole process has really been helpful and comforting.”

Jerry got accepted into Harvard and Columbia. Watch Jerry’s reaction to getting into Harvard!

Forrest said, “I found out about Jerry’s Harvard acceptance from him directly, moments after his acceptance he sent me a message saying “HARVARD CLASS OF 2021”. I read it and I literally jumped out of my chair in excitement. It still makes my heart race thinking about it!”

Jerry attended both the Columbia and Harvard admitted students weekends. “Both were fantastic,” said Jerry, “and I was especially blown away by Harvard. I excitedly committed to Harvard!"

“I feel incredible just thinking about all the opportunities that will become available to me. I am ready and eager to learn and craft my future,” said Jerry. “My brother and I are starting a new trend in our family for higher education.”

Forrest said, “As a mentor the pay-off really comes when the student achieves their goals. And mentoring Jerry really opened my eyes to how much of an impact it makes just to be there to provide advice and encouragement.”

“I look forward to mentoring next fall with Strive for College as well as keeping in touch with Jerry throughout his college journey,” said Forrest.
